Shared Tags

A couple weeks ago we quietly launched a simple new feature on Edmodo, that was the direct result of teacher input. Shared Tags enable you as a teacher to selectively share certain tags with your students.
To share a tag, first click the “Manage” link in the upper-right of the Tags Panel.
This will take you to the Tag Management screen, where you can mark any of your tags as “Shared.”
Any student that belongs to a group you created will instantly have access to the shared tag, using the “Shared” tab that will appear in their Tags panel.
Only teachers are able to share tags. Let us know what you think in the comments, or if you have already started using Shared Tags. Thanks again to our users, for providing us with another great feature idea. Keep them coming…and stay tuned for some very exciting new features coming soon.

I Love tags and being able to share them with students will make certain files and resources easier for them to find!!
It would be even better if students could share tags with one another/me. As someone who wants to use this site for student blogging, I would love to be able to search student posts via tags.
Shared tags are terrific and, I think, a key feature of future learning. We used them liberally in a custom-built ELGG-based platform last year. The key difference, however was that all tags were automatically shared amongst all users. That way we could create a real folksonomy. It also made for terrific interdisciplinary work: the math teacher and literature shared a few common tags so when students filtered for those tags they could see their scale models of the Great Wall of China alongside their analysis of 8th C Chinese poetry.
Ideally, once a group–or better yet, a whole school,or division–creates a tag, all users should have access to it. It makes collaborative learning easier. Do you think such a feature could be implemented in Edmodo?
As a student, I would really like to be able to share my tags with other students and search via their tags. We use Edmodo for book discussions and discuss many books in the same forum, and it would be really useful to tag and search by book. It would be so much easier to find what I’m looking for! Maybe this could be turned off by the teacher, if some don’t prefer it. The feature would be really helpful, though!
