Small Groups Help Students Collaborate

September 2, 2010Features5 commentsEdmodo

Over the course of last school year, teachers requested the ability to create small groups within their larger groups, so students could collaborate on projects.  In the past, teachers have had to create a new group for this purpose, and distribute a new code.  Today, we introduce Small Groups for Edmodo.  To create a small group, go to the Members page for a group (by hovering over the group name, and clicking “Members”).

In the left sidebar you will see a link to create a small group, click it and assign a name using your own naming convention.  You can now highlight students name in the left box and click the arrow to assign them to your small group in the right box.

This is great! I am absolutely LOVING how Edmodo responds to the users. I am thrilled to be one of them, along with my 125 students! Now if you can just add the ability to let students register email AND text alert so we can use both, we would we marching along at warp speed instead of having to backtrack and use a second system for email. But SMALL GROUPS ROCKS, so thanks, Edmodo! I’ll be presenting my use of Edmodo to my entire faculty of about 150 soon, so I would expect quite a few new users to join the party.

How do you delete or remove a small group?

I put my students into small groups by period. I would like to be able to filter the grade book by the small groups so that when I export the grades I can easily enter them into our school grading system by period.

Great feature, but I have a naughty student who has figured out how to create and/or enter small groups on his own. His profile shows him being in 6 small groups, however, I can’t see those groups from my teacher profile… Seems he’s also found a way to link to other students outside of our class in other schools and has created multiple fake teacher accounts and awarded himself lots of badges. How can I fix these problems – I’ve just set the student to “read only” until I can sort it out. Thanks in advance.
