Wondering Coast to Coast: A Read Aloud Project
Posted by: Lucia Giacomantonio
Wonder, by RJ Palacio, is a story of a young boy with a deformity which prevents him from going to a mainstream school until 5th grade. Bullying, kindness, physical disabilities, family issues, friendship, and even the love of a pet are just a few of the issues weaved expertly into the story.
In an effort to encourage friends and colleagues to share this story in middle school classrooms all over the country, Edmodo educators Robert Miller and Lisa Highfill have created Wondering Coast to Coast, a collaborative effort to combine 21st century learning, Common Core Standards, reading strategies, and project based learning into one exciting project that ties together literature, collaboration, and empathy.
Edmodo will be used as the anchor for the project. As you read Wonder aloud to your class, students can connect with each other and their partnering peers to share mutual connections and unique perspectives within their Edmodo group. This is a great opportunity to engage your students with other classrooms around the world!
If you are interested in participating in the program, Robert and Lisa have created a google doc that explains all of the components planned to-date, including reading strategies, collaboration ideas and a culminating project. You’re invited to add your own ideas or alter these plans to customize your own program.
The project begins mid-October. Complete the sign up form to connect with a teaching partner and begin Wondering Coast to Coast!
