As many of you know, Edmodo was created to provide teachers and students with a safe and secure alternative to consumer-based social networking sites. We’re proud of that legacy. Today, five years after Edmodo’s inception, more schools rely on Edmodo for their social learning platform than any other provider in the world. One key reason is our bedrock commitment to security and privacy.
Our privacy policies are among the most comprehensive in K12. We have been continuously and rigorously certified by the leading watchdog organization in the US approved by the Federal Trade Commission for safeguarding child and school online safety. Schools and districts embrace this certification to ensure they’ve done the best for their students.
Recently a newspaper article discussed data security in the classroom and the need for secure socket layer (SSL), an encryption technology, which can sometimes be important in places with open wi-fi networks. What wasn’t in the headline is that Edmodo has been supporting SSL encryption since 2011 and any school that uses Edmodo can opt-in to this, for free. [Here’s how to enable that option]
Soon we’re going beyond. Our big summer Edmodo release, scheduled for July 15, will enable automatic SSL for all of our users, without the need for any additional configuration. There is nothing you or your students need to do to make this happen, just log into Edmodo as normal.
Edmodo’s support team recently won the highest ranked support award for any K12 service currently in existence. This team regularly responds to support questions within four minutes (on average), and they provide answers to all topics including security configuration around the clock.
The pace of change of technology in schools is rapid. In the five years since Edmodo’s inception, we’ve consistently stayed ahead of the curve and today devote more resources than ever to the safety and security of our users.
