As many of you know, Edmodo was founded over five years ago as a closed, private learning network for teachers and students to connect and collaborate. We’ve always believed in creating a safe and secure environment where teachers, school administrators, students, and parents are involved to foster better learning. Today, there are over 33 million educators, students, and parents using Edmodo as their preferred learning platform. One key reason is our strong commitment to user privacy. As we’ve always done, we’re going to continue creating resources to educate you about privacy-related issues, and we encourage you to reach out to us with any questions you may have.

Our privacy policy and our privacy practices go beyond the typical standard in the technology industry.  That’s because of our audience.  We recognize that protecting student information is important.  That’s why we do not rent or sell student information to third parties, and it’s why we do not share this information with any third parties for marketing or advertising purposes.  Our goal is and always has been to empower teachers with valuable tools that help students reach their full potential—and to protect their privacy at the same time.

There have been many industry discussions about student data privacy, including a recent Education Week article that mentions Edmodo. We wanted to take this opportunity to highlight some of the key privacy and security features of our platform, including:

  • The only personally identifiable information that students are required to provide to create an account is their first and last name.

  • Edmodo does not share any user information with ad networks, or other entities that compile information from different websites to create behavioral profiles of users.

  • Parental consent is required before Edmodo can be used by students under the age of thirteen.

  • Parental involvement is built into the platform whereby parents can create accounts to view their child’s activity.

  • Edmodo does not collect any geo-location tracking information.

  • Edmodo has had SSL-encryption in place as an option for users since 2011, and in July 2013, SSL-encryption became the default for all users.

Edmodo’s commitment to protecting its users’ privacy is reflected by how many Edmodo employees focus on these issues.  Edmodo has a Chief Privacy Officer; a dedicated User Trust & Safety Team, made up of employees from almost every aspect of the company; and a Security Team, whose everyday responsibilities are to continually monitor and improve the safety and security of Edmodo’s services.  Edmodo also has an award-winning Support Team, made up of former educators, who are available 24/7 to answer any questions or concerns that users may have.

We highly value the feedback our users have communicated over the years, as it’s an integral part of what has made Edmodo the popular learning platform it is today. We’re here to listen and do everything we can to enhance your Edmodo experience. So, if you have any questions or concerns about privacy, please don’t hesitate to contact us at
