As we close another successful year and prepare to enter a new one, I’m excited to share that Vibhu Mittal has been named Chief Executive Officer of Edmodo. Previously the Chief Technology Officer for the company, Vibhu has made many significant contributions to Edmodo, and I’m thrilled to have him lead the team.
Edmodo has grown significantly over the past six years and now connects more educators, students, and parents around the world than any other network of its kind in K-12, with usage in 93 of the top 100 largest U.S. school districts. Throughout our expansion, we’ve stayed true to our mission, which is to connect all learners with the people and resources they need to reach their full potential. As we work to continue improving learning outcomes worldwide, Vibhu’s history of innovation and passion for education will help propel Edmodo into the next chapter of growth and product development.
Over the course of his career, Vibhu has demonstrated a deep commitment to impactful education, making his progression to CEO a natural next step. Vibhu was most recently the co-founder and CEO of Root-1, an educational apps platform company which Edmodo acquired in March 2013. Vibhu earned a PhD in computer science and has a strong background in education and cognitive science. In the early part of his career, he designed artificial intelligence systems to plan and generate instructional materials that incorporated worked examples. In the mid-1990s, he designed patient education systems to help people understand and manage chronic conditions, such as migraines. Then, for nine years starting in 2000, Vibhu was in research at Google, where he spearheaded a range of initiatives including Google Scholar and Google Translate. Vibhu departed Google to found Root-1, which developed OpenMinds—a mobile platform that allows teachers to share educational content students can pair with interactive games. OpenMinds is now a thriving part of Edmodo.
I’m delighted to welcome Vibhu to his new role, and I’ll continue to work alongside him as President, focusing on strategic initiatives and partnership efforts. It’s a critical point in time for education, and we’re just beginning to scratch the surface on understanding how personalized learning experiences can lead to effective outcomes.
The organic adoption that Edmodo has witnessed demonstrates the need for a learning community that connects educators and students and leverages the power of a network to improve growth and outcomes for every participant. Along with educators all over the world, we look forward to the ways that Vibhu will help us manifest this vision in 2015 and beyond.
